Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Shadow of a Doubt’ [1943] is the story of Charles Oakley [Joseph Cotton], suspected as the ‘merry widow murderer’ and being tailed by the police. ... Martin closes the blind and a casting shadow falls on Charleys face, visually symbolic to the idea he is consumed in his own darkness, and dark deeds. With the decent of the shadow over his face the score begins again, in a rather eerie and somewhat sinister tone, this comes to a climax as he throws a glass at the wall, the non-diagetic sound of the score being matched with the diagetic sound effect of breaking glass, the affect of which revealing quite clearly the violent nature of the previously peaceful man.
