Strong and Beautiful
Imagine a woman dressed in a sexy, skin tight, army print dress, with her arms flexed upward, and her muscularly defined yet skinny back facing the camera. The beautiful model's hair flowing in the wind, while her lips are opened as if she is actually yelling, "Yes I am Woman, Hear Me Roar." With her feminine physical appearance and her masculine stance she advertises the idea of being a strong, sturdy, independent person yet also beautiful and flawless. This is an advertisement found in the September 2001 issue of Cosmopolitan. At the bottom of the advertisement is says in bold and all caps, "STRONG & BEAUTIFUL." As I first glanced at the ad I asked myself, what are the advertisers trying to portray or convey in this advertisement? Are they recruiting for the army? The answer is no, this advertisement is for Gillette Soft and Dri deodorant.
Many women in the twenty first century try to balance being masculine and feminine, so that they can be strong, independent, confident, and still womanly or so they can survive in a male-dominated world or workforce. This deodorant advertisement sells the idea that with Soft and Dri deodorant woman can be feminine while also being strong and at times masculine...
