This memo is to compare and contrast PC's and Mainframes. The mainframes and PCs are made for different purposes and that is why they have very different application areas. Almost everything that a mainframe computer does can be done by a PC but a Mainframe cannot do everything a PC can because it isn't designed to.
Basically, a mainframe machine is designed for number crunching, data warehousing and storage. Large banks and government agencies use them to calculate lots of data in a short time. For example, the mainframe of a credit card companies runs all the time keeping track of all the transactions of the millions of members and making sure that they do not go over their credit limit and if they do, the mainframe stops them from using their cards the next time. When the card holders statement day comes, it also prints the statement and it's address on the envelopes. If the payment is over due, it charges the customer fine for being late with the payment etc. Mainframes have many CPUs (Central Processing Units) but PCs have only one. Now, there is no graphical user interface for Mainframes like Pc's have such as Windows...
