Why is manual handling such an important issue in the organization? What are the different preventative methods organizations can undertake to prevent manual handling?
Manual handling means more than just lifting or carrying something. The term manual handling is defined as "any activity where a person is required to exert force to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain any animate or inanimate object"
(Quinlan, 2000, p- 280). The statistics reveal the dramatic number of lost-time injuries, days lost, and costs as a result of manual handling injuries. Over one third of injuries are attributable to manual handling which makes the prevention of these types of injuries a priority for business, and health and safety professionals. Australia's National Standard for Manual Handling and National Code of Practice for Manual Handling is a systematic approach to remove all the hazards involved in manual handling. The standard requires employers to identify, assess and control all the risks arising from manual handling. This paper will demonstrate the various preventative controls and strategies the organization can undertake to reduce the risk of manual handling in the workplace.
