Within the boundaries of the United States, 85% of the 224,457,000 Americans are Christians (Russell 160). Over generations, numerous pastors, preachers, and teachers have reached people through their teachings. Throughout history, the worldwide spread of Billy Graham's teachings and crusades have impacted the lives of many people from politicians to everyday Americans.
William Franklin Graham Jr. was born on November 7, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His ancestry was Scottish-his family came to American in the early 1700's. Graham's grandfather, Crook Graham, was a veteran of the American Civil War, while his mother, Morrow Coffey Graham, was a descendant of President James Polk. Graham also had 3 other brothers and sisters: Catherine, Melvin, and Jean. His parents were God-fearing country people who encouraged Billy and his siblings to read the Bible, pray often, and work hard on the family's dairy farm.
