A River Runs Through Us

Dyslexia was a big word for me in the second grade, but I had it. When my mother tried to explain it all to me, I promptly burst into tears, crying that I did not want to have dyslexia. I wanted to be like everyone else. My mother said that I should look at dyslexia as a gift because I could see things that other people could not. She said my challenge in life was to learn to use the gift.
What a challenge that turned out to be. By third grade I knew that reading was going to be a huge mountain for me to climb. I was soon picked on by my classmates and called a "sped kid" which means special education person. It was incredibly hurtful for me. I did, however, excel in sports, which is where the majority of my self-esteem came from...
