People liked George Washington, they thought he looked like a general should. Standing six foot two, George Washington was a remarkable general. In fact, John Adams moved that they make him commander of the new army. Washington declared himself unfit for the post, but he accepted this position without pay.
When fighting the British, Washington's troops noticed that Washington would not give up or go away. He could survive any ordeal. He could walk through a field of gunfire and remain untouched. Washington was an outstanding general because, he knew when to retreat, when to attack, and when to spring a surprise. Yet, Washington's greatest gift was that he knew when to take those daring risks he was famous for. Fighting a war can be compared to a chess game...
