Oliver Stone's, "JFK" (1992), purports to represent the history of the John F Kennedy assassination in 1963. Stone does not take fictional characters and put them in a historical context. Stone takes genuine historical characters New Orleans attorney Jim Garrison and activist Clay Shaw and presents his version of what happened. "JFK" attempts to convey a particular version of history. The film does not simply portray Stone's version of history, it seeks to persuade the viewer that Stone's version is the truth. As this essay will discuss, Oliver Stone's portrayal of the JFK assassination is his own interpretation and although contains some 'truth' is not entirely an accurate historic representation.
"JFK" is the story of the investigations of attorney Jim Garrison into the conspiracy surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. As Toplin describes,
"JFK" shows the workings of a vast conspiracy in and outside
the U.S government designed to eliminate President Kennedy
because, according to the movie, he was liberalizing his position
on the cold war and moving toward the removal of U.S troops
from Vietnam...
