On her way to get back to New York she meets a newly fired new reporter who teams up with her and insist on helping her home or risk alerting her father of her whereabouts. The wealthy heiress Ellie Adrews (Claudette Colbert) is escaping her controlling father to live with popular New York news reporter King Westley (Jameson Thomas). Since she is a spoiled she contains no sense of survival when it comes to being alone. She has hardly any money and spends it foolishly until she meets Peter Warne (Clark Gable), and out of work New York reporter headed back home as well. The two meet when they have to share a bus seat and immediately he realizes that she needs just a bit more help if she's going to make it home. Then he discovers who she really is when her father creates a headline in all the papers to bring her back home. He keeps her out of trouble but not with out his own gain. He aims to get a story out of their exploits or he will turn her over to her father.
Andrews and Warne have to run across country with very little money avoiding the watchdogs her father has sent to find her...
