I am here to talk about the situation of asylum seekers whether it is right that they should be detained for indefinitely long periods in detention centres here in Australia,
whether they should be sent back to their countries or whether they should be released to enable them to become permanent residents of Australia.
After reviewing much of the coverage in the media, I have come to conclude that we, as Australians, need to redress the situation.
Lengthy indefinite periods of incarceration are inhumane, in a country, which prides itself on its tolerance. I am not against the process itself.
The desire to verify the truth of each asylum seekers claim is important. However, it is the unnecessary delays that cause much emotional and physical traumas to "would-be" long-suffering people.
The process to decide whether asylum seekers are granted residency is important. Australia needs to have a way to decide which immigrants can become permanent citizens.
Hospital waiting lists are overly long, unemployment is a reality for many and educational places are increasingly few. If we don't screen the applicants and allow all to stay, life here for everyone, asylum seekers included, would deteriorate...
