... This was the challenge that Margaret Mead was faced with when she was dispatched to Samoa by her mentor Franz Boas.
The main issue in this debate is whether or not the information that Margaret Mead collected in regards to the sexual lives of adolescents in Samoa was in fact accurate or not. While Mead claimed that all of her data is accurate and consists of the things she was told while visiting the villages and talking to the young girls was all accurate and as close to verbatim as logically possible. There are those though, such as Derek Freeman, that contend that the information that Mead brought back, claiming to be fact, was in fact inaccurate and flawed. ... There are a variety of things that could sway that argument I either direction and it is clear that throughout the years, there have been many people that have sided with Freeman or Mead.
