Role Models?
There has been much talk lately about what and who have the greatest influence on minority children. Some point to the Internet and others identify celebrities, teachers, television and movies. Some believe that athletes and music artists influence society. A national survey of black American registered voters by Black America's Political Action Committee (BAMPAC) placed athletes, performing artists, politicians, clergy and other celebrities at the top of the pyramid of influence, ahead of parents. In addition, 61 percent of the respondents said parents bear the most responsibility for seeing that their children are properly educated. There are multiple answers, but the major influences on society (mainly youth) are music artist. (Curry)
The main influence on African American children as well as myself are musicians, as well as their music and music videos. Reason being is teenagers and young adults are attracted to the wealthier possessions and the lifestyles of the celebrities that own them, therefore they envy musicians, and lust after their lifestyles. ( Miller)
