Naming the Constellations For ages, people around the world have associated the firmament, the stars, planets, and the patterns they make in the sky with the gods and goddesses of different cultural myths. Mythology has thoroughly influenced many aspects of astronomy, especially the names of the stars and constellations. The major constellations like Ursa Major, Andromeda, and Orion; to name a few, all have myths behind their individual origins. The histories of the astronomical elements are essential in understanding their importance. One might assume that all of the stars, constellations, etcetera, have names as do Cassiopeia, Venus, and Sirius, however that is not necessarily true. The major stars and star groups have preserved their ancient names.
