The Journey of Galileo Comes to an End
Since it's launch in 1989, the spacecraft Galileo has made 38 flybys of Earth, Jupiter, and it's surrounding moons. Now, astronomers say, Galileo's journey will come to a suicidal conclusion as it plunges into the gas giant, Jupiter. Galileo is the exploration mission sent out by NASA to explore and document Jupiter and it's surrounding moons. Although besieged with complications and unexpected trials, Galileo has been remarkably productive in that it executed a surprising flyby of Jupiter's inner moon, Amalthea. As September 21, 2003 draws near, so does the sad conclusion of astronomer's beloved Galileo.
NASA's Galileo explored Callisto, one of the Jovian moons. Callisto is the most heavily cratered object in the solar system, this is probably due to the lack of atmosphere which would stop most of the smaller objects. Jupiter's largest moon, as well as the largest in the entire solar system, is Ganymede. Galileo documented its frosty polar regions. On its journey, Galileo observed Jupiter's inner most big moon, Io, which had an estimated 300 active volcanoes...
