The recent trend in the increasing age of nursing students in associate degree programs provides twoyear colleges with the challenge of meeting the unique needs of older students. Our goal is to elicit change in the learning options provided in the Nursing program at Macomb Community College (MCC). This paper will outline our plan to provide nursing students with a choice of taking nursing theory classes through online courses.
Unfreezing
The average age of an associate degree nursing student is 33.2 years (Anderson, 2000). This increase in the average age prompts a need for change in the learning options for potential nursing students at MCC. Unlike traditional 18-22 year old college students, older students tend to have more responsibilities in and outside the home, such as raising families, working fulltime and increased economic stressors. The current face-to-face learning environment requires students to come to campus at least twice a week and sit for three hours of lecture on the average.
