The main characters in this book are Kevin a.k.a. Freak, and Maxwell Kane. Kevin who is small, smart, kind, out-spoken, and open-minded befriends a Maxwell Kane who is large, shy, quiet, and thinks he is stupid. And this shows the main theme in the book is friendship. It shows that friendship can change people. And when friendship is lost, it hurts a lot.
