Currently in the United States, and in most countries throughout the world, it is illegal to get married to a person of the same sex. However, homosexual people in our society need to have the right to legally marry, as the rest of society does. These discriminatory laws only increase the fear of homosexuals in a heterosexual society, and accept that gay people will be treated differently to heterosexuals. The current laws banning gay marriages need to be abolished due to a wide range of factors. Not allowing gay people to wed is simply discriminating against them, which is against the law. Also, commitment ceremonies are happening widely among the gay community and need some legal recognition. Contrary to the belief of George Bush and many religious groups, marriages will not corrupt the society but in fact strengthen it, and marriage is not simply about raising children, rather it is about love between two people.
On 1 April 2001, the Netherlands made history by becoming the first modern state to recognize the rights of same sex couples to legally marry. In the first year following the introduction of same sex marriage in the Netherlands, 2773 same sex couples had been married, including 1543 male couples and 1230 female couples.
