Malouf demonstrates that the human being yearns for family"
In dream stuff the emphasis on family is widely explored. Malouf demonstrates Amy's need for her uncle Charles and completion in her family. Jacks' longing for his father is also demonstrated as jack continues to struggle with the fact of his father's absence. Malouf also demonstrates Colin's need for the family that he never knew. Maloufs emphasis on family can make a person wonder and reflect on what they may or may not already have.
In the story 'closer', Amy years for her family to be complete. Amy watches one of her family members being shut out from the rest of the family. She struggles to understand why her Uncle Charles is being shut out and begins to see why as she becomes older. Although Amy is aware of why her uncle Charles is being shut out she doesn't understand the need for it, as he still human and part of the family just like her. Amy demonstrates longing for Charles when he comes for visits to their home but never crosses the gate "it seems harder than anyone can bear to stand on one side of the fence and have uncle Charles stand on the other...
