Introduction
What is carnival? Some nationalities, seeing Brazil and Venice in the forefront, think of one elaborate street party, while many Americans would think of amusement parks, cotton candy, and games. Many places in the world celebrate their interpretation of carnival, but what is carnival like in the Caribbean?
Carnival, which can be a grand celebration, came to the Caribbean many years ago during the great surge of the slave trade. It has seen many changes take place. From the abolishment of slavery, to modernization, carnival has had to go with the times and accept change itself. Through these changes however, are there any traditions within carnival that are still around today?
The aim of this senior thesis is to prove that although carnival does not exactly take on the same meaning as it did in the past; there are still many traditions that are kept, and that the attitudes towards these traditions are affected by carnival. To achieve these aims, the objectives were to research the historical background on carnival, describe what carnival is and what goes on during the celebration, explain carnival in the past and the present, as well as discuss any traditions within carnival that are still being practiced today, how they have changed, and why they are still around...
