Trying to figure out where you are and where you’re going … with the help of GPS … no problem ! ...
What is GPS ?
GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a worldwide navigation system formed from a constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. GPS uses these “man-made-stars” as reference points to calculate positions accurate to a matter of meters. Within seconds GPS can determine your position, direction, velocity, altitude, distance and time to destination. ... Department of Defence decided that the military needed a super precise form of worldwide positioning for their military vehicles and the weapon system. ... congress only permitted some $12 billion for developing and installation of such a positioning system, if it also would be available for civil utilization for free. And the result was GPS.
GPS satellites
In orbit they have a weight of 1900 lbs, and a size of 17 ft with solar panels extended. ...
Ground stations
These stations monitor the GPS satellites, checking both their operational health and their exact position in space. There is one "Master Control Station" in Colorado and four monitor stations in Hawaii, Ascension Islands, Diego Garcia and Kwajalein
How it works
The whole idea behind GPS is to use satellites in space as reference points for locations here on earth. Here’s how it works in five steps:
Satellite positions: The Air Force has injected each GPS satellite into a very precise orbit.
