Imagine you work a very stressful office job and you are the most qualified person for that job in the entire state, or perhaps in the country. However, you are paid less because you are a woman. Sound unfair? Believe it or not, this treatment still happens in the U.S. today, maybe not as often as it used to, but it still exists.
In 1963, a law was passed requiring employers to pay all employees that did the same job equally regardless of their ethnic background or gender. This law was originally passed to protect women from gender discrimination in the work place, but it also covers men. The wage gap has narrowed since the '60's when the law was passed, however, federal attempts for equal pay have never been totally successful. In 1980, women's earnings were only 60% of men's, while today women's earnings account for 75%...
