OVERVIEW
Dr. W. Edwards Deming developed 14 Points (Appendix) that encompass his principles for transformation of Western management. Deming and his philosophy are linked to total quality management (TQM), statistical process control (SPC), and outgrowths like Kaizen, Six Sigma, and Japans rise as a manufacturing nation after World War Two. Out of the Crisis (Deming, 1981) documents this philosophy.
CORE CONCEPT
More than just a theory of quality manufacturing, Demings 14 Points, when implemented in their entirety, create the environment for TQM and a complete cultural and management paradigm shift. It is seen as a radical departure from Western management since it encourages the elimination of fear in the work place, breaking down the barriers between departments, elimination of the merit rating system, creation of constancy of purpose while eliminating slogan, exhortations, targets and arbitrary numerical targets (quotas). TQM is about leadership transformation that recognizes the inherent value of the worker and creating an environment that supports everyones efforts to do their best work through constancy of purpose.
