The Wizard of Oz brings to life the classic story of Dorothy who travels to the Land of Oz and follows the “yellow-brick road” in the hope of finding a way home, back to Kansas. This movie depicts Dorothy’s physical journey, beginning in Kansas, to the Land of Oz. Several techniques, like characterisation and symbolism are used to depict the physical journey, and its progress. However, the physical journey is not the only journey that the movie focuses on. ...
The most significant technique used in the Wizard of Oz is characterisation. The development of the various characters in the movie provides a link to their physical progress along the “yellow-brick road”. The physical progress of the characters in the Wizard of Oz directly relates to their spiritual and emotional growth. Hence, characterisation is used to relate to the theme of ‘physical journeys’ in the Wizard of Oz.
Dorothy and her companions journey along the “yellow-brick road” so as to reach the Wizard of Oz in the hope that he will be able to give them what they desire. ... It is only at the end of the journey that they realise that the wizard cannot give them intelligence, courage or a heart.
