Darkness and Light; Caravaggio and His World
“Few artists have so powerfully and truthfully sought, grasped and expressed the drama of the everyday…his observations of the language of the human instinct and body- casual glance, indifferent shrug, the weary slump, the accusing point of the finger, the suspicious eye - are as true and familiar to us today as they were to Caravaggio and his (world) four centuries ago. ...
The exhibition of Michelangelo Caravaggio portrays the “body” through his works during the Baroque period by expressing the realistic human form of the body in its natural state. Caravaggio achieved this by always working directly in the presence of a model, without drawing or researching the subject prior. ... Caravaggio expressed the human form in a very life-like way and in great detail, creating an end result of a very naturalistic artwork.
The contrast of light and dark was a very effective technique used by Caravaggio in almost all of his artworks, he also used mirrors to achieve a “more precise and well defined execution”.
