Six men, in their 30s, were arrested at the Swissport Cargo Warehouse in an operation involving over 100 officers, some armed, acting on a tip-off. Police say the men were trying to steal gold bullion valued at £40m and a considerable amount of cash. Officers are searching for one of two other men who escaped after hijacking a van. The other has been arrested. The gang threatened staff with at least one firearm and other weapons, including knives and cudgels, after reversing through the warehouse shutters in a white Transit van at 1000 BST, according to police.
