In the play Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, the jury system has been promoted as a key to fair judgment during the trial of a young boy who was accused of murder of his father.
Among the jury, there were people of different backgrounds with different personalities and thoughts, which meant their judgment on others, will be different. There was the 5th jury, who lived in a slum (act 1, pg 12) all his life, the 4th jury, who was a broker, 7th baseball fan jury, and the 3rd jury, who was a business man as well as an ashamed father. These different people making up the jury had different point of view on things, as the 10th jury thought the kids who crawl outa those places are real trash (act 1, pg 12) while the 5th jury takes things different as he grew up there and nurse that trash in Harlem Hospital six nights a week (act 1, pg 12). Therefore, when the thought of the kid had killed his father due to the environment he came from would had to be considered again as some of the jury would not agree.
The jury system also acted like a chance for second thoughts on the fairness of the trial. The kid did not have much of a fair chance of staying alive as the 8th jury mentioned the defence counsel wasnt doing his job. He let too many things go. Little things. (act 1, pg 13), not only he felt the defence counsel wasnt doing his job, as the 8th jury later mentioned, Its also possible for a lawyer to be just plain stupid, isnt it?..
