In this essay, I will present several qualities which I consider to be important in a colleague. They are a good sense of humor, creativity, communication, respect, flexibility, vision and those who like to have fun. My discussion will be based off of my own work experience as a Technical Manager and a System Engineer in a large, dynamic software company.
To begin with, I believe a good sense of humor is key to a cohesive work environment. Now, I'm not talking about the ability to keep the team in stitches based off your favorite one-liner or the ability to recite lines from your favorite sitcom. But a sense of humor is critical in anyone whose position involves any degree of pressure or stress. The ability to keep a rational perspective in the face of irrational demands, to preserve a certain congeniality and self-control rather than snapping at those around them is what I mean by a sense of humor. I like people who know that, in the end, maintaining a positive relationship is the most important goal.
