Samia Akhter Sociology 105 Essay # 3 There are four types of language that we read about in the book. These four types being Cant, Jargon, Argot, and Slang. Each language type is not always used by each person. For example, Cant, would most likely be used by pickpockets, murderers, drug dealers, and prostitutes. They would include a dialect, which would look like this, “college” meaning prison, “stretch” meaning jail sentence, “to mouse” meaning to escape from prison, and “lifeboat,” meaning a pardon. Most likely you would hear a prostitute sat “gorilla” or “outlaw” which would either mean someone who beats them or one of their kind that works without a pimp. Another dialect would be Jargon, which is most likely used by physicists, lawyers, physicians, economists, and carpenters. Terms that they would use would be “glouns,” “quarks,” “inflationary spiral,” “party of the first part,” and “cripple wall.” Argot the third alternative language is widely used among taxi drivers, truck drivers, ham radio operators, military personal and circus or carnival workers. By a truck driver you might hear “smoky” when referring to a cop.
