After his mother was imprisoned by Union soldiers, Jesse joined “Bloody Bill” Anderson’s Confederate guerilla army. ... Born from Robert James, who was a Baptist minister and cofounder of the William Jewell College, and his wife whose name is unknown, Jesse Woodson James was brought into the world. Robert James died of cholera and his mother remarried to Reuben Samuel. They were always slave owners and Jesse was brought to awareness with the antislavery state of Kansas.
