In the play, "Educating Rita" there is many verbal and non-verbal elements. Both of these elements shape and give meaning to the rest of the play. Noticeable is the verbal elements such as Frank and Rita talking, the more non-noticeable (non-verbal) elements include Frank shaking his head or moving to a specific location in the room.
The most unstable of characters is Frank. There are two main sides to Frank, his sober side and his non-sober side (although he is portrayed as being constantly non-sober). Frank is a teacher who is at the crossroads of life and cannot decide whether he wants to continue teaching or not. Frank seems to suffer from boredom, he often drinks, and lacks self-confidence such as on page 13 he explains to Rita that he is an "appalling teacher."
Rita enters the play as an uneducated student who is unusually in her 20s. She crosses the path of Frank and changes his life forever. From the very start, she seemed to be an unusual student and this does not change as the play continues...
