" I woke up this morning exhausted from hiding the me of me" stated Devon Hope (page 32). This quote is important because it describes how many of the students changed from being shy to outgoing through their poetry. This story is powerful and has much diversity, making one realize how difficult it can be to be a teenager growing up, especially in the Bronx. Tyrone was the main and most changing character throughout the novel. He began the year not wanting to even be in school, thinking he had no future. Tyrone judged his classmates wrongly but at the end he wanted a future and knew more about his classmates just from listening to them read their poems than he could've ever imagined. He changed socially, mentally, as well as morally.
It is clear that Tyrone changed in a very positive way socially within the novel. In the beginning, he only wanted to hang out with Wesley and the rest of his "crew". But then after Open Mike Friday's began he became interested in the other students' writing...
