William Faulkner present many conflicts in his novel Light in August. Many authors have psychological conflicts in their novels, and Faulkner does this, however, there are also many physical conflicts. One of these conflicts takes place in chapter nine. Some other examples of physical conflicts are the burning down of Joanna Burden’s house, the fight between Byron Burch and Byron Bunch and Lucas Burch, the beating of Joe Christmas as a boy, the killing of Joe Christmas, and many more. The incident, which occurs in chapter, nine, is basically the act of Joe Christmas killing Mr. McEachern and the many smaller events which lead up to this climactic ending. At the start of the chapter we see Joe sneaking out of the house and putting on a nice suit. This is showing a change in identity; Joe must put on these different clothes and then he becomes a different man. McEachern does not approve of this after he finds out about the suit.
