Paracelsus was an amazing man. In only 48 years of life, he seemingly single-handedly did more in the field of medical treatment than anyone else since the fall of Rome. Unlike other doctors of the time, Paracelsus was not content to employ the widely accepted cures for various ailments, because he could see that they did not work. This was a bold and dangerous move. After the fall of Rome, the Catholic Church had become the main authority for most matters, including higher education. By using methods that were different from the ones taught in universities and approved by the Church, he risked death. Although he was never executed for his beliefs, he was exiled twice. Paracelsus was always testing out different mineral combinations. He noted which ones worked, and which ones didn't. He wasn't afraid to admit when he failed to save a patient...
