"ABOVE THE LAW" SHORT ESSAY
In Jerome H. Skolnick and James J. Fyfe's book, Above the Law: Police and the Excessive Use of Force, the authors' main contention is that the police feel that they are, as the title suggests, above the law. That the very people charged with upholding the code of law set forth by the government feel that the code does not apply to them. They cite many occasions that give the impression that the police do in fact feel that the laws do not apply to them. In doing this though the authors do not give a completely one-sided argument. They also give instances where people think that the police are over-stepping their bounds when in fact they are not. The authors also feel that the police are not acting like this inside a vacuum. They give the societal reasons that cause the police to act like this.
