W.E.B. Du Boise and the Reconstruction Movement
The Black Reconstruction Movement led by W.E.B. Du Boise if defined by Kornblum would be considered a reformist movement. Born William Edward Burghardt Du Boise, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts it was obvious to most that he was going to be a person that would bring about change. W.E.B. Du Boise graduated from high school at the age of sixteen, the only Black in his class of twelve, and won a scholarship to Fisk University. ... The Black Reconstruction Movement began in the early 1900’s and was led by W.E.B. Du Boise, who was a very charismatic leader. The Movement was initially to counteract the Back to Africa movements brought about by Marcus Garvey and encourage Blacks to remain in America. W.E.B. Du Boise thought that the main problem in America, in his times, was the color line. ... Du Boise believed that if he could destroy the color line, then he could destroy racism al- together (Black Reconstruction in America 21). ... ” This would perhaps be the exact reason why the Reconstruction Movement came about. ... Once more, based on the descriptions of social movements in Kornblum, Black Reconstruction would be defined as a Reformist movement. Kornblum writes that a reformist movement seeks change in some institutions and values, usually on behalf of segments of a society. Reconstruction did not seek to change America it simply sought change in particular aspects of American life.
