The Hindenburg was the biggest airship of its' time.
Stretching in over eight hundred feet long, and weighing in at
242 tons. The length of this ship would be three football
fields long and three times as long as a Boeing 747. Its
mostly metal frame was filled with hydrogen. It came complete
with numerous sleeping quarters, a library, dining room, and a
magnificent lounge, but still managed a top speed of just over
eighty miles per hour (Robinson 34). It had every safety
precaution you could think of to prevent an explosion or fire.
The inside of the Hindenburg has a rubber coat on all the walls
to prevent sparks or static electricity to prevent any excess
hydrogen from catching fire. The employees wore asbestos suits,
and felt boots, and the suits had no zippers or buttons to
prevent static electricity to build up. All matches and
lighters were confiscated and given back at the end of the trip.
The only cigarette lighter was a pressurized light to prevent
any stray sparks...
