For David Hayden, the field of events in Montana, 1948, opened his eyes to things he didn't imagine possible. He learnt and took in a deeper understanding into what it was like not to have the perfect, fairy-tale life. He learns of Uncle Frank's (the black sheep of the family) secrets and the skeletons of his closet are revealed to prying eyes. David watches people's relationships. He watches how many fall apart. David notices changes in others and learns new aspects about people and their personalities. He is introduced to an interesting piece of advice given to him by Len "knowing when to look and when to look away." But for David this when he should speak up and when he should just shut-up, as he is stuck in his moral dilemma of whether he should tell his parents what he knows, or to keep it to himself in the interest of his uncle's private affairs.
The events of 1948 unfold with Wes caught between roles; the sheriff, a brother, a husband, a son, a father, Gail is in the background, like Wes' conscience, telling him to do the right thing, and then there is David, invisible to his parents, him disappearing into the shadows so he can ears-drop on his parents conversations, without him being suspected of knowing a thing.
