In the story "The Cast of Amontillado", by Edger Allan Poe, Montresor tells how he is going to seek revenge on his friend, Fortunato. Montresor intends revenge against his friend because of the "thousand injuries of Fortunato that he had borne as best he could" (pg. 141). Montresor lures Fortunato to a vault of some type to seal him in to die there. As I read this story, I had the feeling of dread and horror as I discovered that someone was going to be buried alive.
It was "about dusk one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season" that Montresor encountered his friend, Fortunato (pg. 142). The mention of the word "dusk" gave me the sense of darkness like something evil was going to happen in the dark night. Montresor states that it is the season of "supreme madness" which gave me the feeling of uncertainty and suspense. The hour is late as Montresor tells me that it is "midnight" (pg...
