I selected this topic because communicating effectively with coworkers and upper management at Reed Construction Data (RCD) my place of employment has always been of importance to me. Reed Construction Data, located in Norcross Georgia, is a publication company that provides information to the construction industry. While analyzing RCD, I realized that effective communication skills were needed in several of the company's departments.
Effective communication is one of the most important workplace skills, and yet this is an area that frequently causes more problems for people than any other. Many people feel misunderstood and worry that their needs will not be met. They can also feel manipulated by those around them into doing things that they don't want to do or which go against their principles. Because we spend so much of our lives at work it is certainly important that we enjoy what we are doing and that we get along with those we work with.
With effective communication an employee becomes more efficient and their surroundings are less stressful. With the rise of technology in the workplace, such as personal computers, e-mail, the Internet and cellular phones, one would think that communicating with supervisors, coworkers and upper management would make an employee more productive in daily operations, but at RCD at some instances it doesn't. I have noticed that some of this new communication technology is abused or ignored...
