Being an individual of foreign birth, I understand that racism is very relevant to today's society. Authors Judah Waten and T.A.G Hungerford explore this issue of racism in their short stories "The Knife" and "The Only One Who Forgot" respectively. These two short stories have had an impact on me because I was positioned to feel sympathetic and even empathetic towards the characters who were victims of prejudice. My response was shaped by the author's use of narrative elements and techniques, which included structure, characters, language and symbolism.
The structure of "The Knife" is two segments. In the first segment, Plinio is portrayed as a hard working young man striving to feed his family in Italy. "He never worked less hard because of them, but always harder," and all the villagers held Plinio with respect. However, this was contrasted in the second segment about Plinio in Australia...
