The primary accountability of a manager is to use his necessary skills which include conceptual skills, human skills and technical skills to attain organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading and controlling. As managers in an era of changing environment, amongst the 4 management functions, providing leadership is becoming increasingly important. Leading means creating a shared culture and values; communicating goals to employees throughout the organization and using of influence to infuse and motivate employees with the desire to perform at a high level to achieve organizational goals. In other words, to be a good manager in a changing environment such as uncertainty, downsizing, and international competition etc, we must have the ability to shape culture, communicate goals, and motivate our subordinates which are critical to business success. And whether we can get these done relies heavily on our conceptual skills and human skills.
Conceptual skill is the cognitive ability to see the organization as a whole and the relationship among its parts. It means the ability to think strategically, to take the broad and long-term view. To cope with the changing environment, we must improve our conceptual skills particularly in areas include paradigm shifts, chaos theory, workplace diversity and globalization.
