Drug-testing in custody and the problems associated with it have, in recent
years, been a major cause of concern. Employers seek workers who are
clear-headed and responsible. Resolved: Mandatory Drug Testing should be allow
in workplace, because employers have the right to establish a policy for drug
testing, many employers are taking a hard line on drug abuse, and the Institute
For A Drug Free Workplace sponsored a Gallup survey of 1,000 employers.
Point one, employers do have the right to establish a policy that requires their
employees to be drug free and to implement drug testing as part of their
program. Employers argue that workers must be clear-sighted and in their right
mind to perform their duties at work. Furthermore, many employers (and people in
general) believe that the more important the job, the more important it is to be
"clean". For example, a politician has a duty toward the voters who elected him
or her. Also, employers counter that arguments stating out of the workplace
interfere with their work, then it becomes the employer's business.
Point two, many employers are taking a hard line on drug abuse. In 1983, 3% of
the Fortune 300 companies engaged in drug testing of at least one class of
employees or job applicants, but by 1990, over 80% tested...
