Q1: What made you want to become a dental hygienists?
A1: Well, when I was in high school I worked my family dentist who was also a personal friend of my parents. He had watched me grow up and at the time there were not many hygienists. He encouraged me to apply to Ohio State University. I was going to be a teacher but got into the program and loved it.
Q2: What skills, knowledge and abilities are needed to become a dental hygienist?
A2: Of course a college prep curriculum in high school with strong science classes is important. Once in college you will need good science knowledge, like anatomy, structure of the mouth, and science of bacteria. After that, cleaning the mouth is very detailed work therefore one should be good with their hands and very meticulous. I guess good people skills are also needed because you deal with all kinds of personalities...
