Some critics of high school athletes believe that an athlete that may gain 50 pounds and muscles in the off season uses steroids or other drugs. The critics believe they can cut down on drug use by distributing drug tests to each athlete. As a high school athlete, I know that most of the time when an athlete gets bigger and stronger it happens because of many hours of hard work, albeit, there are some athletes that try to take a short cut by using steroids or some other drug. Not only do these people run the risk of short-term consequences, drugs can hurt young people later on in their life. These tests would not only be used for steroids, but for other illegal drugs as well.
Drug testing of all high school athletes would never be possible. Critics of steroid testing argue that no public school could afford to test every single one of its athletes, and testing of every athlete will probably never happen. If the schools were going to test athletes, they would also have to test all other extra-circular activity participants to be fair. Those against drug testing may say that drug testing is an invasion of personal rights. That could be to a certain extent, but if participating in a sport or club involved with other young people, the school holds the right to require a drug test...
