1. What distinctive competencies has Mays exploited to build Clear Channel Communications?
In 1972 Lowry Mays and Red McCombs form San Antonio Broadcasting Company to acquire KEEZ-FM (now KAJA-FM) in San Antonio, Texas. This was the beginning of what is today the biggest force in U.S. radio and a growing power in billboard advertising and entertainment promotion (2). Most of non-television advertising that is seen out today is brought to us by Clear Channel Communications. The #1 radio station owner in the US, Clear Channel owns, operates, programs, or sells airtime for some 1,270 radio stations (including pending transactions); it also has equity interests in more than 240 radio stations internationally. One of the world's largest outdoor advertising companies, Clear Channel has more than 787,000 outdoor advertising displays (billboards, transit displays) worldwide.
