I would sum the definition of religion given in class up like this religion is a sacred engagement with what people take to be a spiritual reality. They also describe religion in class as a cultural system of shared ideas and practices about fundamental things or a cult. Religion provides a sense of security to people it reduces people's anxiety and provides a list of rights and wrongs. Religion also passes on history and traditions mostly through rituals like communion. Religion helps maintain society by pulling people together but also by pulling people apart. The text definition of religion is "the materialistic point of view is that the supernatural is imaginary; only the material world exists. From this point of view, religions have been invented by humans" (Fisher pg.17). Also stated in the text is that "all religion shares the goal of tying people back to something behind the surface of lifea greater reality which lies beyond, or invisibly infuses, the world that we can perceive with our five senses" (Fisher pg. 16)...
