Drifters Bruce Dawe
Written from the persona of 3rd person narration, the poem 'Drifters' By Bruce Dawe talks about a family who are "drifters". They do not belong anywhere and are just continually moving on. The poem addresses social conflict, emotional conflict, as well as personal conflict. Bruce Dawe is an Australian poet whose father was often out of work. For Dawe, this poem could very much be a personal reflection on life.
Although the poem is narration styled, the poem seems to be based upon, who I believe to be, the mother. We are first introduced to the Mother when he [The Father] tells her its time to start packing. For this woman it is a very emotional time and the activity [of moving on] is becoming repetitious. This is shown in the continued use of "and" at the beginning of lines in the poem. Seven of the twelve lines start with 'And'...
