The 1995 Kobe earthquake ocurred along the southwestern margin of the eurasian plate, where the Phillipine sea plate is being subducted beneath it in a northwesterly direction along the Nankai trough. The main shock ucrred along a northwest trending branch of a major east-northeast trending fault called the Median Tectonic Line (mtl). In the past, there have been less earthquake here than in the Tokyo area and other areas of japan, but in historical times has had magnitude 7 or higher quakes. The epicenter of the quake was at 15 to 20 kilometers underground. The aftershock sequence was about 60 kilometers long, going from north Awaji island along a fault known as the Nojima to north east Kobe on the Pokko Fault zone.
A nine Kilometer long surface rupture was seen on the Nojima Fault. Measured in two places by the Geomatrix Consultants (a company), the fault measured a 1.2 meter vertical displacement and a 1.5 meter right strike-slip displacement.
