In David Suzuki's essay "It Always Costs", he talks about the cost of technology. "We must understand that there is no such thing as a problem-free technology" (Suzuki 313). This essay shows that technological innovation always has detrimental side effects and also discusses the failure of attempts to predict these effects. The limited assessments, the effect of synergistic and unanticipated fluctuations make the cost/ benefit analyses unreliable. The pretesting of any new technologies is always flawed by the restricted size, scope, time, and conservative estimation. Suzuki concludes with a call for action: "If every technology has a cost, the more powerful the technology, the greater its potential cost. We have to build into our judgments a large leeway for our ignorance and err on the side of extreme caution" (Suzuki 314-315). Suzuki's essay is effective because the structure, examples, and diction all work together to support his thesis.
