A common trait of feature films is how audiences are encouraged to take a particular side in issues and conflicts, but particularly characters. The film Mississippi Burning, directed by Alan Parker, examines a racial segregation conflict between 'white' and 'colored' people in the American state of Mississippi, set in 1964. The particular issue is the murder of three young men; two white civil rights workers and an African-American. Characters in the film are shown as either 'good' or 'bad,' and the narrative intentionally encourages the audience to side with the 'good' characters.
It is easy to tell whether a character is either 'good' or 'bad' simply by looking for their visual representations. A perfect example of this is the sheriff. He is dressed in the same uniform throughout the film, wearing his shirt unbuttoned towards the top, showing matted chest hair. He constantly retains greasy 'hat hair...
